Check out this quick video of my process behind this digital painting. I study the reference photo closely through out the drawing and painting process. I started with a rough line drawing. Then I rough in a background color, I never paint on white because it makes it harder to accurately see color. Then I start roughing in the colors and shapes of the portrait, and tighten up details as I go.
