Children's Illustration

I was given the assignment to illustrate a flower shop. I started out with some sketches of a sweet little flower shop with a lady and a little girl. This would be a little too obvious and expected by the audience. After talking with a colleague he challenged me to do something a little more unexpected. He recommended playing with storytelling contrast more, ie. big and small, old and young. Taking the advice to heart and not wanting to do something expected, I came up with a fun solution. Inspired by the plant from little shop of horrors and the pirana plants in Mario I came up with this idea. I played with big and small, young and old, “scary” and light-hearted. You can see an old man in the back caring for a younger version of the monster plant. One of the other things I like to do is empower children through my illustration. I put this kid in a situation that would be scary to some, but he is totally confident with his new monster plant friend. Just because something is different doesn’t mean we need to be afraid of it. The original illustration was painted on illustration board with acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, and inks. I then scanned it and made some tweaks digitally.
